Let’s get gardening: April 2017

I’m seeing all kinds of indications that spring is here – my crocus have been up for weeks, the daffodils are just about to burst into bloom, tulips are coming up, and forsythia are just starting to get color. It won’t be long now until we are in full gardening mode – and I can’t wait!

In this issue:

Yard & Garden

  • It’s been a soggy month! Stay off of garden beds and lawn until things dry up a bit.
  • Take stock of seeds and stop by the store to fill in gaps
  • Sharpen and clean tools
  • Keep garden covers handy for those below-freezing nights!
  • Use a soil kit to see what’s lacking in your garden soil — great soil can save money on fertilizers later on!
  • Pull mulch away from plants to help the soil warm up faster
  • Clean up yard debris and branches (see tips on beneficial insects that may be hibernating)
  • Cutting back grasses and perennials when the weather is right
  • What veggies you can plant this month
  • Divide summer perennials (remember the Chelsea Area Garden Club’s Plant sale on May 6)
  • How to tell when the soil is ready for planting dormant trees and shrubs

  • Clean and check your bird houses and bird feeders
  • Consider putting up a Purple Martin house in your yard
  • Provide nesting material for birds
