Let’s Get Gardening: November 2016

The Farmer’s Almanac says we should expect some snow and cold conditions by mid-November. It’s hard to believe, with the kind of weather we’ve been having the last few days! However, if they’re right, then I had better get a move on in getting my gardens cleaned up and my flower bulbs and garlic planted! It’s so much nicer to do these things when the weather is cool and clear than when it’s cold and snowy!

In this issue:

Vegetables & Herbs

  • If you haven’t already cleaned out the leftover plant material from your garden, it’s a good idea to do it now.
  • Pull weeds and throw them in the compost pile.
  • If you haven’t turned your compost pile lately, do it now.
  • If you have compost that’s ready, add it to your garden once you’ve cleaned the garden up.
  • Get your garlic bulbs and be ready to plant them once it has cooled down more.
  • About the time you plant garlic, you can also try sowing some peas and spinach.

Flowers

  • Pull spent annuals this month and compost them.
  • Remove weeds from your flower beds.
  • Once the soil has cooled down, add a layer of fresh mulch to your flower beds.
  • Plant your spring-blooming bulbs once it has cooled down sufficiently.
  • If you’d like some flowers in your house over the winter, consider forcing bulbs inside.
  • Plan on cleaning containers out by mid-month, or at least moving them to a sheltered location.

Trees & Shrubs

  • Avoid over-trimming trees and shrubs.
  • Put up stakes to use to attach burlap to for wind barriers around evergreen trees and shrubs.
  • Make sure that your trees and shrubs go into winter fully hydrated.
  • Add a layer of fresh mulch to trees and shrubs, once the soil has cooled.

Lawn & Leaves

  • Lawns are still growing, so make sure to keep mowing.
  • Use your mower to shred leaves and mulch them into the lawn.

Tools

  • Clean, dry, sharpen and lubricate your garden tools before you put them away.
  • Empty your hoses, roll them up, and tie them before hanging them up for the winter.

Birds

  • Leave your birdbaths out as long as possible. De-icers allow you to provide a vital source of water for your birds all through the winter, without risking damaging your birdbath.
  • If you don’t feed your birds year-round, from now to next spring is the best time to do so.
